Embry-Riddle Headlines Volleyball All-Conference Honor Roll
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Sun Conference announced the 2009 All-Conference volleyball team at the conference tournament banquet at the Sunset Harbor Yacht Club on Thursday evening. The All-Conference roster was voted on by the league head coaches and featured 14 student-athletes representing five schools.
Melissa Batie of Savannah College of Art and Design was named the 2009 Coach of the Year, after leading the Bees to a second place finish in the regular season, and a 26-7 overall record.
Player of the Year honors went to Embry-Riddle’s Abby Hall. A sophomore outside hitter, from Louisville, Ky., Hall played in all 30 matches for the Eagles this season, leading the conference in kills per set (3.86) and total kills (371). A two-time league Player of the Week, she was also second in the league in hitting at .280.
Hall’s fellow sophomore Julia Frassetto garnered Libero of the Year recognition after playing in 94 sets during the regular season. Frasetto was tabbed as the conference Player of the Week on Nov. 1 and leads The Sun Conference in total digs (446) and digs per set (4.74).
Embry-Riddle freshman Adriana Vazquez was named the Setter of the Year after playing in 28 of the Eagles’ 30 matches. The Orlando, Fla. native has 897 assists in 90 sets and leads the league in assists per set with 9.97.
Another Embry-Riddle freshman, Jordan Holcomb, was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year. Holcomb has played in 90 sets and is averaging 3.12 kills and 2.08 digs per set. She leads the Eagles in blocks (54) and service aces (46) and is among the conference’s top 10 in service aces per set (7th, .51), total kills (6th, 281) and kills per set (4th).
Saira Morgan of Ave Maria was selected as the 2009 Champion of Character Award winner. A senior for the Gyrenes, Morgan was selected as team captain for the 2009 season. Described by Head Coach Mary Reed as a true leader on and off the court, Morgan competed in 21 matches, averaging 1.54 kills and .89 digs per set.
The 2009 Sun Conference tournament, presented by the Sunset Harbor Yacht Club and hosted by Embry-Riddle, gets underway at noon on Friday with No. 4 St. Thomas taking on No. 5 Warner followed by No. 3 Webber International against No. 6 Northwood at 2:30 p.m. The winner of the first match will play No. 1 Embry-Riddle at 5 p.m. and No. 2 SCAD will take on the winner of the second match in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
