Embry-Riddle Beats Northwood to Win Conference Tournament Title
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The 2009-10 Sun Conference women's soccer tournament crown belongs to the Embry-Riddle Eagles after their 2-1 victory over the Northwood Seahawks on Friday afternoon. The Eagles (14-5) also shared the regular season conference title with Northwood (13-5).
The first half featured back and forth play between both squads but neither team could find the back of the net. Strong winds played a major role in keeping the teams from scoring.
The second half looked to be much like the first but a Seahawk goal in the 80th minute put Northwood up 1-0 and looking to escape with the win.
However, exactly a minute later senior Lindsey Evans struck home a free kick from five yards outside the penalty box to even the score at 1-1.
The Eagles were not done there as Sun Conference Newcomer of the Year Krizzy Menez dribbled down the right sideline and shot a ball that was initally saved by Northwood goalkeeper Mia Moeller. Menez collected the rebound and put home the Eagles' second goal to account for the final 2-1.
The Seahawks had the better of the shots 17-7, but ERAU held the edge 5-4 in corner kicks.
The Eagles advance to the 2009 NAIA National Championship. ERAU's opponent, game date and time are yet to be determined.
