Volleyball makes school history and is off to amazing start in their first season as member of The Sun Conference.
The 2009 Lady Gyrenes added another one to the win column with a 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 win at Florida Memorial University Friday night. AMU’s overall record now stands at 3-1 as they head into tomorrow’s game against conference foe St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida.
In their 3-0 win over FMU, Christianne Ludwick led the offensive attack, racking up nine kills followed by Adriana Vianna and Saira Morgan contributing six kills each. AMU Head Coach Mary Reed stated one of the bright spots of the game was “Megan Arago’s awesome serving.” She continued to mention that another area in which the team improved was their blocking.
Coach Reed has done a fantastic job making sure her talented team is ready to play, and as they continue to improve on their game, the season is sure to be exciting. They are now 2-1 in conference play, having lost to Sun Conference powerhouse Embry-Riddle University.
To put it simply, Ave Maria is off to a tremendous start this 2009 season. Last week the Gyrenes faced Southeastern University in an away game that marked the first meeting between these two teams in the prestigious NAIA The Sun Conference.
SEU and AMU hit it back and forth in what became a chilling come from behind victory in favor of the Gyrenes. This will be put in the record books as the first conference win in Ave Maria University’s history, and it was accomplished in dramatic fashion. AMU won the first set 25-22 before losing the second 17-25. Then, a hard fought third set was claimed by AMU at 29-27 followed by a 25-23 fourth set which allowed the 2009 Lady Gyrenes to take it on home with a 3-1 victory in the bag. Senior Adriana Vianna led all players with 22 kills followed by teammate Christianne Ludwick (12 kills) and SEU player Casey Jensen (12 kills).
The AMU volleyball team will next take on St. Thomas University, Saturday, September 5th at 4pm.
