Women’s Tennis Blanks Northwood 5-0 to Capture Conference Tournament Title
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The top-seeded Embry-Riddle women’s tennis team captured the program’s first conference tournament title with a 5-0 defeat of No. 2 seed Northwood, Sunday at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts. With the win, the Eagles earn a spot in the NAIA National Tournament that takes place May 18-22 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
The contest at No. 1 doubles featured an All-Conference cast as all four players were first team honorees in 2010. Sunday’s match-up went to the third-ranked duo of Natasa Zoricic and Yi Ching Chen from Embry-Riddle as they took an 8-1 decision against Mikaela Seger and Fiorelle Moggia. Caroline Nilsson and Sara Abraul made it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles with an 8-1 defeat of Didi Jurman and Adriana Herran at the No. 3 doubles spot.
The match at No. 2 doubles position was a back-and-forth battle between Embry-Riddle’s Josefine Strom and Julija Stojkovska and Northwood’s Priseila Duarte and Christine Novakova. The Northwood tandem took a 7-6 lead and seemed poised to win the match but Strom and Stojkovska fought back to take the next two games and win the match 9-7, giving the Eagles a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play.
Playing at the third position in the singles lineup, Nilsson took a 5-2 lead over Herran before Herran retired due to injury. Chen recorded her 25th win of the season, downing Moggia 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to score the clincher.
The Eagles improved their record to 15-10 on the year, while the Seahawks fall to 7-6.
