DECATUR, Ala. – Monica West drove in five runs to help Trevecca Nazarene University defeat the Savannah College of Art and Design 13-3 in pool-play action at the 2010 NAIA Softball National Championship Thursday (May 20) morning at the Wilson Morgan Complex.
The 17th-ranked Trojans improved to 42-15 overall and to 1-0 in Pool B while the Bees, who are making their fifth trip to nationals in the past six seasons, fell to 35-16 and to 0-1. SCAD returns to action at 10 a.m. Central time Friday (May 21) when they will face No. 2 Lee University.
SCAD took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Trojan starter Riley Mashburn (23-7) without a benefit of a hit. #Carleigh Shannon# drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. Shannon, who has 55 stolen bases on the season, moved over to third on a #Kristen Curette# ground out and scored on a Mashburn wild pitch.
Trevecca Nazarene regained control of the game as they touched up Curette (10-3) for six runs in the second inning. The Trojans took the lead for good at 2-1 on Lauren’s Baker seventh homer of the season to left field. West contributed a bases-clearing double and Anais Puertas added an RBI double.
Trevecca Nazarene added four unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 10-1 lead before the Bees scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. #Candle Pfefferle# had a pinch-hit RBI ground out for SCAD in the fifth.
The Trojans closed out the scoring in the seventh with a two-run single up the middle for West and Breanna Zeis added an RBI single.
