Savannah College of Art and Design men’s cross country runner #Cesar Fernandez Lazaro# advanced to the finals of the 5,000-meter run at the 2010 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University.

Lazaro, a 5-foot-11 freshman from Soria, Spain, finished in sixth place in the first of three semifinal heats Friday (May 28) evening with a time of 15:10.14. The top four runners from each of the semifinal heats automatically earned a position in the 5:35 p.m. final Saturday (May 29).

Lazaro, who was named SCAD’s Paul E. Poetter Male Athlete of the Year, earned his spot in the final by posting one of the four fastest remaining times beyond the 12 automatic qualifiers. Lazaro, who is the first SCAD runner – male or female – to qualify for the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship, had the 11th-fastest overall time of the 16 runners that qualified for the final.
