Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team Announced
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Sun Conference Office announced the women’s soccer All-Conference team on Monday. The first and second team rosters featured 23 student-athletes combined from four Sun Conference institutions. Regular season champion Northwood placed nine on the honor roll, while league runner-up Embry-Riddle put eight on the All-Conference listing, voted on by the league coaches.
For the second year in a row, Northwood sophomore Helen Lynskey was tabbed as the conference Player of the Year. A native of Sheffield, England tops the league in points per game (3.89) on 27 goals and 16 assists for a total of 70 points on the year. In addition to setting a school record for points in a single season, Lynskey was voted as the league’s Offensive Player of the Week three times and holds the distinction of being the only player to score in every regular season conference game in 2011.
Newcomer of the Year honors went to Lynskey’s teammate Amy Vaughan. Vaughan, who is also a sophomore, totaled 18 points on six goals and six assists in her first season in the Seahawks’ midfield. The Sheffield, England product played in all 16 of Northwood’s regular season contests and registered one game-winning goal on the year.
Johnson & Wales head coach Eric Dobrzanski was named the league’s Coach of the Year. Now in his second season as the Wildcats’ head coach, Dobrzanski was recognized for his program’s improvement over last season. After finishing at the bottom of the league standings at 0-9 a year ago, Johnson & Wales closed out the 2011 campaign at 4-12 and were 3-6 in conference play with wins against South Carolina Beaufort, Warner and Webber International.
Embry-Riddle’s Lauren Gallant was selected as The Sun Conference Champions of Character Award winner. The junior, who has been the Eagles’ starting goalkeeper in this season, has a 3.87 grade point average in Aeronautical Science. Gallant, who ERAU Head Coach Samantha Bohon describes as a “low maintenance/high trust player” was the recipient of one of ERAU’s Champions of Character Scholarships and has volunteered for a variety of community service projects, including working with Habitat for Humanity and speaking at local elementary schools and church functions.
