WEST PALM BECAH, Fla. – The Sun Conference announced the 2012 All-Conference roster for men’s basketball at the conference tournament banquet hosted by Northwood on Thursday evening. NAIA No. 1 Northwood had the biggest haul on the night with three All-Conference selections as well as the Player of the Year, the Defensive Player of the Year and the Newcomer of the Year.
St. Thomas head coach Clarke Maloney was selected as the Coach of the Year after leading the Bobcats to a 14-2 regular season conference record and a share of the regular season title. After starting the year at 1-6, Clarke’s Bobcat team turned things around and closed out the regular season at 21-7 and are ranked 11th in the latest NAIA national poll.
For the second straight year, Northwood senior Jonathan Dunn (Toledo, Ohio) took home league Player of the Year honors. A four-time conference Player of the Week, Dunn led the Seahawks to a share of The Sun Conference regular season title, averaging 21.4 point, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
Defensive Player of the Year honors went to the Seahawks’ Tyrone Davis. Davis (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), also a senior, leads the nation in total assists (247), assists per game (8.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (4.3). The 5-6 guard tops the league and is second nationally in total steals (92) and steals per game (2.97).
Davis and Dunn’s teammate, Masse Doumbe (Le Mans, France), garnered Newcomer of the Year honors after transferring from Polk State College. Named the conference Player of the Week on Jan. 9, the junior is averaging 13.8 points, 6.7 boards and 1.3 blocks per contest and leads the league in free throw shooting with an 84.7 percent (127-150) clip.
Embry-Riddle’s DeForest Carter was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year. In his first season of collegiate basketball, Carter is averaging 11.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game and ranks among the league’s top 10 in totals steals (3rd, 58), assists per game (3rd, 4.3) and blocks per game (4th, 1.3).
In addition to individual on-court accomplishments, the conference also recognized nine Champions of Character Award recipients and six Academic All-Conference selections. To be eligible for the Academic All-Conference, a student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at the league institution and have a 3.5 or better grade point average, while the Champions of Character Award honorees are nominated by their head coaches.
Sun Conference tournament play resumes on Friday with the semifinals being played at Northwood’s de Hoernle Center. Third-seeded Warner (22-9) will face No. 2 seed St. Thomas at 5 p.m., followed by fifth-seeded Embry-Riddle against host and top-seeded Northwood at 7 p.m.
