2013 Women's Basketball Tournament Set to Begin
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The bracket for the 2013 Sun Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, Presented by Shula's Hotel and Golf Club has been announced by the conference office. All eight league teams will participate in the event starting on Tuesday, Feb. 19 and concluding with the final four this weekend, Feb. 22-23.
St. Thomas finished the 2012-13 conference schedule unblemished, posting a perfect 14-0 record. The Bobcats became the first team since Webber International in 2005-06 to go undefeated in conference play and the 12th-ranked team in the country will be the host of the final four if they win their quarterfinal game against the eighth-seeded Royals of Warner on Tuesday in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Ave Maria, the 2011-12 regular season and tournament champion, will be the second-seed after finishing 12-2 in conference play with the only losses coming at the hands of the Bobcats. The Gyrenes will play host to seventh-seeded Florida Memorial on Tuesday, a team they beat twice by an average of 14.5 points in two regular season meetings.
The Seahawks of Northwood went 7-7 in league play, and thanks to their tiebreaker over Webber International will be the #3 seed in the tournament. The Seahawks host Johnson & Wales in the quarterfinals and will look to claim the rubber match in the season series. The Wildcats downed the Seahawks in North Miami, Fla. on Jan. 26 before Northwood returned the favor in West Palm Beach on Feb. 12.
The final quarterfinal matchup be feature fourth-seeded Webber International and fifth-seeded Southeastern. The Warriors went 7-7 in the league while the Fire posted a 5-9 ledger this season. Both teams won on their home floors against each other during the regular season.
The four winners of the quarterfinal games will travel to the highest-remaining seed for the final four with the semifinals taking place on Friday, Feb. 22 and the championship game slated for Saturday, Feb. 23.
The tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa (Mar. 6-12).
