Southeastern wins schools first men's golf championship

CELEBRATION, Fla. – The Southeastern men’s golf team made program history as Linzy Clark, Kyle Martin, Isaac Spencer, Frederic Thieriz and JD Cobb combined to capture the 2013 men’s golf Sun Conference Tournament title on Tuesday at the Mystic Dunes Resort and Golf Club in Celebration, Fla. The title is the first for the First since the league moved to its current format.
Southeastern, who entered the day with a 15 stroke lead, carded the lowest score in the final round with a 285, sealing their win by 24 strokes. The Fire finished with a 54-hole total of 860 (292-283-285), the lowest score in conference tournament history.
Clark took home individual medalist honors after defeating Billy Nisbet of SCAD Savannah in a playoff, sinking a putt of more than 50 feet for the victory. Clark (69-71-72) and Nisbet (73-68-71) concluded regulation with three round totals of 212.
Martin and Spencer joined Clark on the All-Conference team, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Martin finished one shot behind the leaders with a 213 (73-68-72) while Spencer was one shot behind him with a final round 70 for 214 overall (76-68-70).
No. 20 South Carolina Beaufort made up five strokes in the final round to jump past both Warner and fifth-ranked Johnson & Wales to take second place. The Sand Sharks carded a final round 289 to leapfrog the competition and finished the tournament with an 884 (308-287-289), led by Tyler Jacobs’ (77-69-72=218) eighth place finish.
With the second lowest score of the final round, 287, the Bees of SCAD Savannah (310-298-287) jumped two spots and finished two shots out of second place, tied with Johnson & Wales (300-290-296) with 54-hole totals of 886. Warner slipped two spots and rounded out the top five with an 888 (295-299-294.)
Northwood settled into sixth with an 897 (312-296-289), followed by No. 16 St. Thomas (302-307-290=899), Thomas (302-304-293=899), Webber International (303-303-299=905), Embry-Riddle (315-312-298=925) and Ave Maria (353-362-352=1067).
Omar Tejeira headlined the All-Conference team as he was named the league’s Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. St. Thomas and Johnson & Wales led all schools with two All-Conference honorees each.
With the win, Southeastern has secured an automatic bid to the 62nd annual NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship, May 14-17 at the Creekside Country Club in Salem, Ore.
