DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Sun Conference announced the selections for the 2014 Women’s Soccer All-Conference teams on Thursday. The All-Conference roster, consisting of 13 first team members, 10 second team honorees and 10 honorable mention selections, was voted on by the league coaches.

Sophomore Johanna Engberg of 14th-ranked Northwood was tabbed as the league’s Player of the Year. A forward from Stockholm, Sweden, Engberg led the league in scoring with 24 goals to go with 12 assists for a total of 60 points. Named The Sun Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 13, she also leads the NAIA in game-winners with eight.

Newcomer of the Year honors went to Embry-Riddle freshman Julia Karlernas. A native of Torsby , Swedend, she has been mainstay in the ERAU midfield with a team-best 1,382 minutes played. Karlernas is the top-ranked Eagles’ assist leader with seven to go with six goals for 19 total points.

Southeastern sophomore Alysa Kaminsky was a unanimous choice for the league’s Champions of Character Award. Prior to the start of the season, Kaminsky’s father passed away. Following that devastating loss, she returned to her team and showed her strength and character by encouraging her teammates who were going through difficulties. She sustained a mid-season injury and while she wasn’t able to take the field for three weeks, she encouraged her team from the sidelines, while taking the time to make sandwiches for 250 plus elderly people on a bi-weekly rotation, speaking to teammates and schoolmates about adversity and challenging them to be fighters. She was able to return to the SEU lineup and tallied six goals and four assists to finish tied for second on the squad with 16 points.

“Alyssa exemplifies the term Champion of Character,” SEU Head Coach Bronson Gambale said. “I have never met such a strong and inspiring young person. This season, Alyssa was the beacon of what it means to be a Champion of Character.
Alyssa is a top shelf player on the field and is even more impactful off the field. She works with our volunteer programs, ministers to girls, and inspires everyone around her.

“Alyssa came back [from injury] and played her first real minutes against Warner (which was on her father's birthday). She scored a hat trick to go along with two assists. She has been an inspiration and blessing to coach.”

Johnson & Wales Head Coach Eric Dobrzanski was chosen as the Coach of the Year after leading the Wildcats to a 3-10-5 overall record, a 2-4-3 conference record and a conference tournament semifinal appearance.

The league also announced the Academic All-Conference team on Thursday, which included 51 women's soccer student-athletes. Embry-Riddle’s Johanna Karlson (sophomore, Business Administration), and SCAD Savannah’s MacKenzie Kastner (sophomore, Interior Design) and Theresa Stevens (sophomore, Graphic Design) hold the distinction of being the only three individuals on the 2014 women's soccer Academic All-Conference roster with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Members of the All-Conference team will be action on Friday as play in the 2014 conference tournament concludes. No. 2 seed SCAD Savannah will take on top seed Northwood at 2 p.m. at Northwood’s Arrigo-Vecellio Field.
