MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Yesenia Lora of Webber International was named Player of the Year to highlight the 2013-14 women’s basketball conference awards, announced Thursday at the postseason banquet for The Sun Conference Women’s Basketball Championship presented by Shula’s Hotel and Golf Club.
Lora, a 5’9” guard/forward from Winter Haven, Fla., leads the conference in scoring with an average of 17.2 points-per-game. She also averaged 7.7 rebounds-per-game which ranks seventh amongst league leaders. Lora has scored 20 or more points eight times this season with a career-high of 31 points vs. Southeastern on Feb. 1.
Joining Lora as First Team All-Conference selections are Antishia Wright and Daniella Ciccarone of St. Thomas, Sharnele Brown of Northwood, Annie Artise of Ave Maria, Brooke Garmon of Warner and Alyssa Ramos of Southeastern.
Northwood’s Atavia Blake, a Second Team All-Conference selection, was named Newcomer of the Year and Southeastern’s Ramos was named Freshman of the Year. Travaniece Coleman of Johnson & Wales was honored as this season’s Champions of Character Award Winner.
Southeastern Head Coach Drew Watson was named Coach of the Year. Watson led the Fire to a tie for second place in the conference with an 11-5 record. It marked a strong turnaround for Southeastern which went 5-9 in conference play a year ago.
Thirteen student-athletes were named Academic All-Conference for the 2013-14 season. A student-athlete must have completed a two or more full semesters at the nominating institution and have a 3.5 or better cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) to be eligible.
