Seahawks, Warriors Earn Wins in TSC Quarterfinals
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The men’s tennis teams from Northwood and Webber International earned quarterfinal wins on Thursday to move on to the semifinal round of The Sun Conference Tournament being hosted by Embry-Riddle at the Crotty Tennis Complex. Northwood held off SCAD Savannah 5-3, while Webber International topped St. Thomas to advance.
The first quarterfinal match was an exciting four-hour affair. SCAD took an early 2-1 lead after doubles, but Northwood notched singles victories at the first, second and sixth positions, to take a 4-3 lead. The final two singles matches, on courts four and five, both went to three sets, leaving the team outcome in question. The deciding match came at the fifth position where Jacob Alplund rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to top Manatse Mazime 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 to score the clinching point. The Seahawks will face Embry-Riddle in the semis on Friday.
The second quarterfinal saw third-seeded Webber International build on a 2-1 lead after doubles and grab points at the first, third and sixth positions to advance to play Warner in Friday’s second semifinal.
Both semifinal matches will begin at 2 p.m.
