ERAU, SCAD to Battle for TSC Championship
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The women’s tennis teams from Embry-Riddle and SCAD Savannah each won their respective semifinals on Friday to advance to the title match of the 2014 Sun Conference Tennis Tournament. The Eagles and the Bees will be meeting in the tournament finale for the fourth straight year on Saturday.
Top-seeded Embry-Riddle (14-5) was the first to finish its contest against fourth-seeded St. Thomas. After sweeping all three doubles, the Eagles took the lead at the fourth and fifth positions as Paola Montero won the first set against Ahern 6-2 and Eva Vilar won her first set against Brigitte Bustamante 6-0. When rain halted play moments later, both Ahern and Bustamante opted to retire, giving the Eagles the win and a spot in Saturday’s championship match.
The second semifinal was an intense match-up between the third-seeded Bees (8-6) and No. 2 seed Northwood. Northwood jumped out to an early lead, winning both the second and third doubles matches, but the Bees got a point back when the sixth-ranked team of Theresa Schmaus and Maja Plavsic downed Justyna Wojcik and Valentina Souki 8-2.
In singles play, the Seahawks won on courts three and six, but SCAD notched wins at the first, fourth and fifth positions to tie the team score at 4-4. At No. 2 singles, Plavsic fell behind early, dropping the first set to Souki 6-0, but the SCAD senior rallied to win the second set 6-3 and clinched the win for the Bees with a 6-3 decision in the third.
