The Sun Conference 2015 Men's Soccer Awards Announced
The Sun Conference announced the 2015 Men's Soccer All-Conference honors and special honors on Friday evening at the 2015 Sun Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Banquet hosted by Southeastern. The All-Conference teams featured 25 student-athletes and an 11-member Honorable Mention team.
The Conference Player of the Year and Offensive Player honors went to Southeastern University forward Pedro Ivo Dias. A junior midfielder from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil earned this honor after being a second team All-Conference member last season. This season, he was second in the conference in points (26), goals (10), and third in assists (6). Dias was named Sun Conference Player of the Week twice.
Shane McInerney, a senior center defender for Keiser University, was named Defensive Player of the Year. A 6-4 senior from Ballinasole, Ireland had started all 16 games and had the most minutes played for the Seahawks on the year. From the back, he scored one goal and had one assist while being a threat every time the ball was in the air.
The Freshmen of the Year honors went to Southeastern’s goalkeeper Jorge Navarrete. Jorge from Plant City, Florida appeared in 17 games with 14 starts racking up a 12-3 record. He recorded seven shutouts, while making 71 saves. Navarrete is currently riding a five match shutout streak. This season, he has been named Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week three times and earned NAIA National Player of the Week once.
Coach of the Year honors went to Southeastern’s Clay Roberts. Roberts led the Fire to their first ever Sun Conference title along with their first ever appearance the NAIA Top 25 ranking. Southeastern concluded the season ranked 17th in the country. The Fire went 13-4 overall and 8-1 in the Sun Conference including seven shutouts in their last eight contests.
The Champions of Character award went to Pedro Codo of Johnson & Wales. Codo, a 5-6 senior from Sao Paulo Brazil.
The semifinals and finals of the tournament are set to take place Saturday and Sunday at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida. The semifinals will consist of Thomas University taking on St. Thomas University and Keiser University battling Southeastern University.
