LAKELAND, Fla.—Half of The Sun Conference Championship Game has been set with St. Thomas winning the first semifinal before lightning postponed the second semifinal.
The Bobcats (11-5) defeated the No. 3 seed in the tournament in Thomas, getting a goal in the 56
th minute when Nico Sobanski tipped the ball just over the goal line on a feed from Victor Cortez for the lone goal of the match.
Thomas (14-5) outshot the Bobcats 15-11, with seven of its shots on frame. STU keeper Deljan Bregasi made seven saves, including a pair at point-blank range to keep his team in the lead. The Night Hawks also had 13 corner kick opportunities, compared to just one by St. Thomas.
Just as Southeastern and Keiser were taking the pitch for warmups, a storm system came through Polk County that contained frequent lightning strikes through the evening. At approximately 8:35 p.m., the decision was made to push the second semifinal to 11 a.m. Sunday.
The championship game has been pushed back to Monday at 5 p.m. at the Southeastern University Soccer Complex.
