Sun Conference Announces Women’s Tennis Honors
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Embry-Riddle University junior Hui-I Huang was named The Sun Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year and headlined the 2015 All-Conference team, which was announced by the league office following the conference tournament banquet, hosted by Embry-Riddle Wednesday evening.
Huang went 12-10 in singles play this season, including a 4-2 mark in conference play. The native of Changhua, Taiwan was 8-6 at #1 singles for the Eagles this season.
Huang also earned Doubles Team of the Year honors with teammate Anna Gotz. The tandem has combined to go 12-3, including a perfect 6-0 in conference play.
Conference Coach of the Year honors went to Southeastern University’s Bill May, who guided the Fire to a third straight conference tournament appearance, and a 4-3 record in league play. SEU is currently ranked 24
th in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.
Southeastern University junior Alexis Quinn repeated as the Champions of Character award recipient. Following the suicide of a local middle school student as the result of cyberbullying, Quinn created the “Kool 2 B Kind” campaign, which has resulted in over a thousand students to pledge not to bully. “Alexis is one of the most special people I’ve met,” said May. “She can bring a smile to the face of one person with a hug of kindness at one moment, yet has a vision to bring kindness and smiles to the faces of many.”
Academic All-Conference awards were also handed out during the banquet. To qualify for Academic All-Conference honors, a student-athlete must have completed at least two full semesters at the nominating institution and carry a 3.5 or better cumulative grade point average. A total of 11 individuals were presented with this award, led by Quinn, who has a 3.93 GPA as a double major in Finance and Marketing.
Tournament play begins at 2 p.m. on Thursday when Southeastern takes on St. Thomas in the first quarterfinal. The second quarterfinal between Northwood and Warner will begin at 4:30 p.m. Top seeded SCAD Savannah and second seeded Embry-Riddle received first round byes and will take on Thursday’s winners at 4:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
The tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship in Mobile, Alabama May 12-16.
