Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament Presented by Olympus Insurance
The 2018 Women’s Basketball Sun Conference Championship Tournament Presented by Olympus Insurance is set to begin with quarterfinal play on Tuesday, Feb. 20 followed by the semifinals and championship game on Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24.
Southeastern (27-0, 18-0 TSC), the number one ranked team in the nation, won the regular season Sun Conference title and in turn will be the tournament’s number one seed and host for the semifinals and finals. The Fire will receive a bye past the opening round of the tournament and await the winner of the Johnson & Wales vs. Ave Maria quarterfinal.
St. Thomas (20-8, 16-2) earned the number two seed for the tournament with a second place finish in the regular season conference standings. The Bobcats will also receive a bye past the opening round of the tournament and will await the winner of the Thomas vs. Coastal Georgia quarterfinal.
The number three seed in the tournament will be Coastal Georgia (17-10, 11-7 TSC) by virtue of a tiebreaker. The Mariners will host Thomas in the quarterfinals on Tuesday with the winner facing no. 2 seed St. Thomas.
Ave Maria (20-8, 11- TSC) is the fourth seed and will host Johnson & Wales in a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday. The winner of the AMU vs. JWU quarterfinals will then face top seed Southeastern in the semis.
No. 5 seed Johnson & Wales (12-15, 8-10 TSC) and no. 6 seed Thomas (9-15, 5-13 TSC) will each travel to play quarterfinals games on the road on Tuesday evening.
Following Tuesday’s quarterfinals, the excitement of The Sun Conference Championship Tournament will move to Lakeland, Fla. where top seeded Southeastern will host the semifinals and championship game as well as the conference awards banquet.
The conference awards banquet will take place on Thursday, Feb. 22. On Friday, Feb. 23, the first semifinal will pit no. 1 seed Southeastern vs. the winner of Johnson & Wales-Ave Maria at 5 p.m. The second semifinal between no. 2 seed St. Thomas and the winner of Thomas-Coastal Georgia will take place at 7 p.m.
The Championship Game is set for Saturday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. in Lakeland.
