DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle sophomore Jan Hoekzema was recognized for his performance on the court last week as he was tabbed The Sun Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Ranked ninth in the latest ITA/NAIA national poll, Hoekzema started the week with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Webber International’s Phillipe Andermatt at the No. 2 singles position, helping the Eagles to a 9-0 win over the Warriors on Wednesday. He also teamed up with Carlos Bes Comeras at No. 1 doubles to top Andermatt and Caio Cardoso 8-6. On Saturday, Hoekzema made the move to the top singles spot for the third time this season and recorded a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Daniel Abbink as the Eagles shut out Northwood 9-0. Hoekzema and Bes Comeras easily dispatched Abbink and Kevin Butler 8-1 to improved their overall doubles record to 19-3.
