DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Southeastern's Drew Matthews has been selected as The Sun Conference Men's Golfer of the Month for the month of March.
The sophomore Mathews won his first career collegiate golf tournament, March 14th, winning the 21st Annual Eagle Invitational by three shots at Pelican Bay Golf and Country Club. The win was important in that the Eagle Invitational was one of three major tournaments on The Sun Conference schedule. Southeastern fired a three-round total of 903 (296-312-295) Mathews shot a two-over-par 73 in round one, which put him two shots behind the tournament leader after round one. He fired a second-round 74 to stay in contention and Mathews shot a two-under-par 70 in round three, which helped him leapfrog the leader and two others to take the tournament by three shots with a 217. The round of 70 was the best round of the tournament, and Mathews' 217 was just one over par for the tournament overall. The tournament field consisted of 18 teams and over 100 players. It is Mathews' third top-five finish of his career.
