SCAD Men's Golf Captures the Florida Sun Conference Championship

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Savannah College of Art and Design captured the 2007 Florida Sun Conference Men's Golf championship with a team total of 906 which was 17 strokes better than the second-place Embry-Riddle University squad at 923. 

The event is also the NAIA Region XIV Tournament which saw Johnson & Wales capture the event after being upset last season by then FSC member Flagler College.  The Wildcats carded a 54-hole total of 903 , currently ranked fourth in the latest NAIA National Poll, narrowly defeated SCAD by three strokes and withstood the late-charging Bees who fired the second-lowest team round of the event with a 297, while JWU closed out with a 305. SCAD's Colin Kelly (220) shot the lowest third round score firing a 69 and took home the FSC Player of the Year and medalist honors, while he finished as runner-up in the Region XIV medalist race by one shot to JWU's David Tobon (219).

ERAU was consistent throughout the tournament scoring 307, 311, and a final round 305 and were led in the final round by Stephen Hellwege who posted a final round 70.

Northwood and Thomas claimed the third and fourth spots, respectively carding 931 and 938.  Tournament host Webber International was fifth at 940, followed by St. Thomas with a 944.  Rounding out the rest of the teams was Warner Southern, carding a 956.

Johnson & Wales will move on to represent Region XIV in the National Tournament at the Indiana National Golf Club in Plymouth, Ind., while SCAD, Embry-Riddle and Northwood will await at-large berths to the National Event.
