St. Thomas Captures First FSC Men's Golf Title

LAKE WALES, Fla. - The St. Thomas University men's golf team won the Florida Sun Conference Championship for the first time since 1998 on Monday after a three-round 884 (294-298-292=884).
The Bobcats fell one shot of defeating NAIA Region XIV tournament winner Johnson & Wales. The 54-hole tournament was played April 13-14 at the Lake Wales Country Club, a Par 72 course spanning 6,855 yards.
Webber International finished third in the region and second in the conference with the Warriors' two-day total of 900 (303-303-294=900). Savannah College of Art & Design was one stroke behind WIU for a fourth-place region and third-place conference finish. The Bees totaled 901 (300-298-303=901).
The individual winner of the tournament, Dave Tobon of Johnson & Wales University, shot a 215. Craig Isabel of WIU earned FSC Player of the Year honors with his finish of 218 (73-70-75=218). Je Her (STU), Alejandro Valasquez (STU), Mike Becktor (SCAD), Juan Orodonez (STU) and Michael Kartrude (WSC) were named to the FSC All-Tournament team. The six FSC golfers also earned Region XIV All-Tournament honors.
Second year head coach Alex Fernandez received FSC Coach of the Year honors, the first for the school since 1998.
St. Thomas will wait until the end of April to find out if the team will receive an at-large berth to the NAIA Men's Golf Championship.
