Embry-Riddle Headlines Volleyball All-Conference Honor Roll

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Sun Conference announced the 2010 All-Conference volleyball team at the conference tournament banquet on Thursday evening. The All-Conference roster was voted on by the league head coaches and featured 13 student-athletes representing five schools.
Joslynn Gallop of Embry-Riddle was named the 2010 Coach of the Year, after leading the Eagles to their second consecutive undefeated conference regular season (12-0), a 28-2 overall record, and a No. 12 national ranking.
Player of the Year honors went to Embry-Riddle’s Abby Hall for the second consecutive year. A junior outside hitter from Louisville, Ky., Hall played in all 102 sets for the Eagles this season, leading the conference in kills per set (4.52) and total kills (461). A five-time league Player of the Week, she was also second in the league in hitting at .280.
Hall’s fellow junior Nina Kontrec garnered Libero of the Year recognition after playing in all 102 sets during the regular season. Konrec leads The Sun Conference in total digs (527) and digs per set (5.17).
Embry-Riddle sophomore Adriana Vazquez was named the Setter of the Year after playing in all 102 sets for the Eagles. The Orlando, Fla. native has 1190 assists and leads the league in assists per set with 11.6, ranking her second in the nation in that category.
St. Thomas sophomore Betina Schmidt was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year. Schmidt transferred to St. Thomas this year after attending Fresno Pacific for one year. Schmidt has played in 23 matches for the Bobcats and is averaging 3.6 kills per set, third-best in the conference, and 3.1 digs per set, seventh-best in the conference. She is also among the conference’s top 11 in hitting percentage (.252, 3rd), total kills (265, 8th) and assists/set (1.8, 11th).
Northwood’s Cody Kiraly was selected as the 2010 Champion of Character Award winner. A senior setter for the Seahawks, Kiraly was selected as team captain for the 2010 season. Described by Head Coach Katie Plummer as a true leader on and off the court, Kiraly competed in all of Northwood’s 80 sets, leading the team in service aces (26) and assists/set (9.5).
The 2010 Sun Conference tournament hosted by SCAD Savannah gets underway at 10 a.m. on Friday with No. 6 Norhwood taking on No. 3 SCAD Savannah followed by No. 5 Warner against No. 4 Southeastern at 1 p.m. The winner of the first match will play No. 2 St. Thomas at 4 p.m. and No. 1 Embry-Riddle will take on the winner of the second match in the nightcap at 7 p.m. The conference final is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
