MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The St. Thomas Women's Soccer team welcomed Webber Int'l to campus Thursday for the first round of the Sun Conference Tournament. The Bobcats held strong and outlasted the Warriors, 3-1.
STU came into the match as the tournament's fourth seed and faced the fifth seeded Warriors. The Bobcats jumped out to an early lead as senior Adriana Rodriguez dribbled from midfield all the way to the net and finished just under the Webber keeper's outstretched arm. St. Thomas added to their first-half lead as Sara Mira finished a beautiful pass from Emily Vicci by chipping the keeper from the 25'.
Defense was the focus of the second half, as the Bobcats dropped from pressure to protect their lead. Webber's Candice Cunningham brought the game back to life on a bang-bang play inside the STU box. The match regained some excitement at 2-1 with just ten minutes remaining. St. Thomas sealed the deal with an Amanda Belarmino goal finished on a great through ball from Gabrielle Smith.
St. Thomas' 3-1 victory came with a solid defensive effort from Ariana Lorenzo in the net. Lorenzo held the Warriors scoreless for eighty minutes and recorded three saves for the match.
The Bobcats (9-6-1, 5-3-1 TSC) advance to the second round of the conference tournament and will face No. 1 seed Northwood in West Palm Beach on Saturday, November 6 at 12 p.m.
