WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – In front of a packed house on the first day of school in 2011, the #10 Northwood University Seahawks toppled The Sun Conference rival #4 Embry Riddle 77-74 in regulation.

Northwood, now 13-2, 4-0 TSC, shot 67.9% from the floor and 75% from behind the arc in the first half. The sharpshooter performance by the Seahawks earned them an 11 point lead heading into the locker rooms. The Eagles, 15-2, 3-1 TSC, were not that far off the NU pace, netting 58.6% of their shots from the floor.

The accuracy of Northwood faltered in the second half, allowing ERAU to make it too close for comfort at times. Their percentage was cut in half, only converting 36% from the floor. The Eagles also suffered from a drop in accuracy, but remained more consistent firing 42.3% in the last 20 minutes. Strong defense and an amped home crowd gave the Seahawks the leverage they needed to hold off the onslaught of the Eagles.

This week’s The Sun Conference Player of the Week Jonathan Dunn led all scorers with 23 points. Dunn also led the game in steals with 3. Patrick Horstmann completed yet another double-double, dropping 17 points on the Eagles with 14 rebounds. Seniors Courtney Walters and Melvin Calhoun each had great percentages, going 5-7 (14) and 3-4 (10) respectively.

Last week’s National Player of the Week David Butler finished with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Blake Touchard would go 6-13 for 15 points while Brett Rawlings combined 11 in the effort.

Northwood now sits atop The Sun Conference standings at 4-0 followed closely by Embry Riddle at 3-1. Both teams continue their conference schedules on Wednesday. The Seahawks will take on Southeastern at home starting at 7 while the Eagles will travel to Lake Wales to take on Warner University.
