Top Ranked Seahawks Defeat NCAA I Fordham University
Bronx, N.Y. – Senior All-American Jonathan Dunn scored a game-high 27 points as the preseason nationally ranked no. 1 Northwood University men’s basketball team defeated the Rams of Fordham University (NCAA Division I) by a score of 76 – 71 in the Rose Hill Gymnasium. The game marked the Seahawks’ first meeting against the Rams who are head coached by Tom Pecora, a former assistant coach of Rollie Massimino at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.
The Rams got off to a quick start leading the Seahawks 21-10 on a 3-pointer by Brandon Frazier with 11:56 to go in the first half. The Seahawks then went on a 35-10 run and entered halftime ahead 14 points with a score of 45-31.
The Rams came out of halftime blazing by going on an 18-8 run. A Jumper by Brandon Frazier with 11:04 left to go in the second half got the Rams within 4 points of the Seahawks with a score of 51-47. This is the as close as the Rams would come throughout the rest of the contest. The Seahawks then used a 3-pointer by Thierno Agne, a 3-pointer by Tracy Parks, a jumper by Thierno Agne, and a 3-pointer and jumper by Jonathan Dunn to put the Seahawks ahead by 10 points with 6:57 left to go in the game.
The Rams were able to cut the Seahawks’ lead to 5, but the Seahawks shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the final 4 minutes of the game. Tyrone Davis went 4-for-4, Noah Keeton went 2-for-2, and Jonathan Dunn connected 1-for-1. Dunn led the way scoring a game-high 27 points going 9-16 from the floor, 4-6 from behind the arc, and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. The senior also recorded 4 assists and 4 steals. Tyrone Davis played an outstanding game at the point, recording 9 points on a 7-for-8 free throw shooting performance, while also recording 6 assists on only 1 turnover. Other key contributors from the Seahawks included senior Noah Keeton (12 points), junior Tracy Parks (9 points), and junior Thierno Agne (8 points, 4 assists).
The Rams shot 50.9% from the field and 44.4% from beyond the arc, while the Seahawks shot 42.4% from the field and 47.6% from 3-point land. Free throws were clutch for the Seahawks as they connected on 16-of-18 (88.9%), while the Rams shot 7-for-11 (63.6%). Despite being outrebounded 40-24, the undersized Seahawks forced the Rams into 20 turnovers while only committing 8.
After dropping their first exhibition game last Friday night to the University of Maryland (NCAA DI) by a score of 89-84, the Seahawks conclude preseason play 1-1. The top ranked Seahawks will begin their regular season schedule this Friday when they take on Trinity College (Fla.) at 7 p.m. on the campus of Northwood University.
