Sammie Clark is the new single season record holder with 244 rebounds this season.
LAKELAND, Fla. – Sammie Clark broke the Warner University single season record for rebounds in a season and the Lady Royals basketball team defeated cross-county rival Southeastern University 75-58 to close out the regular season portion of their 2010-11 schedule on Friday night.
Clark scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds to pass Jill Banse and become the new record holder with 244 rebounds on the season.
The Royals finish the regular season with a 14-16 overall record and a 9-5 The Sun Conference record; Southeastern falls to 11-16 (5-8 TSC) with the loss.
Three pointers carried the Lady Royals in the first half. Warner connected on seven shots from behind the arc to build a big lead in the half. The Lady Royals led by 16 at the break, 46-16. Candace Smith scored 11 first half points to help lead the way.
The Lady Royals were held to just 31.3% shooting from the field in the second half but Smith carried the offense with 19 second half points. The Lady Royals made four more three pointers to give them 11 in the game cruising to the 75-58 victory over the Fire.
Candace Smith’s big night ended with a career high 30 points on 10 of 16 shooting including 4 of 7 from behind the arc. Shawnelle Campbell and Tracy Gentry each registered double digit performances; Campbell scored 19 and dished a game high four assists while Gentry finished with 12 points all on 4 of 8 shooting from three point land.
Sammie Clark tallied six rebounds in the game and scored eight points. With the six rebounds, Clark passes Jill Banse (239) from the 2002-03 Lady Royals squad and is now the single season record holder with 244 rebounds this season.
For the Fire, Ashley Wilson's 20 points and six rebounds led the way. Casey Jensen added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Breckley Neale came off the bench to score nine points.
The Lady Royals will now await tomorrow night’s The Sun Conference games to determine who they will face in the opening round of The Sun Conference tournament. The Lady Royals will host an opening round game as well as the Final Four.
