Lynskey, Lady Seahawks Top No. 10 Embry-Riddle
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore Helen Lynskey scored four goals as the nationally ranked No. 22 Lady Seahawks upset the No.10 nationally ranked Eagles of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University this weekend on their home turf.
The rain came down as the whistle blew to start the game, but that did not stop the underdog Lady Seahawks from dominating on the road. The Lady Seahawks came out strong to start the game with an unassisted goal scored by Helen Lynskey at 1:33. Embry Riddle tied the game up at the 22:26 mark on a goal scored by Valerie Obita. As the second half started, the Lady Seahawks came out strong with a second goal by Helen Lynskey which was assisted by Amy Vaughn at 54:25. A few moments later at 56:15, Helen Lynskey scored once again on an assist by Amy Vaughn, making the score 3-1 in the Lady Seahawks' favor.
Embry Riddle showed some life and scored their second goal at 73:53 by Valerie Obita, making it a one point game. Nothing could stop the Lady Seahawks this night. Moments later, the Lady Seahawks came out with their fourth goal of the game by Julia Hassel, assisted by Annika Hogberg at 76:22. The Seahawks now led 4-2.
The Lady Seahawks' defense was hard and strong throughout the rest of the game and did not allow the Eagles to score again. However, Helen Lynskey was able to score one more goal before the end of the game at 79:37 which was assisted by Annelie Nilsson.
"The ladies played extremely well tonight," said head coach Matt Dunn. "We had a game plan and we executed it perfectly. Embry-Riddle is not an easy place to get a win. We knew that we would have to fight to get this one. I am very happy for the effort that our girls showed, and feel that we truly earned this one."
With the win, the Lady Seahawks improve to 4-1-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. The loss drops the Eagles to 5-2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Northwood University Lady Seahawks will return to action when they travel to Savannah College of Art and Design to take on the Bees on Sunday at 1 p.m.
