St. Thomas wins on Golden Goal in Overtime in Semifinals

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The first seeded St. Thomas Bobcats defeated Northwood, 2-1, in double overtime on Friday at Bobcat Field to earn a spot in the Sun Conference Men’s Soccer Championship game.
 
Two St. Thomas reserves came off the bench to combine for the game-winning goal in the second overtime period as midfielder Jairon Moreno scored the game-winner on an assist by Andres Tuesta.
 
After a scoreless first half, the Bobcats struck first on a goal by Sun Conference Player of the Year Jhonathan Rico in the 49th minute off an assist by Juan Lara.  St. Thomas protected its lead and a shutout for 85 minutes until Northwood’s Marcus Johansson tied the game at 1-1 with just 3:45 left to play in regulation.
 
The two teams went scoreless through the first overtime period before Moreno scored the game-winner in the 105th minute.
 
St. Thomas will face off against cross-town rival Florida Memorial on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in The Sun Conference championship game to be held at Bobcat Field on the St. Thomas University campus.
