Warriors Take Conference Series from No. 12 St. Thomas
BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Webber International Warriors baseball team took three game series from #12 NAIA nationally ranked, St. Thomas University (Bobcats), by winning two of the three games. The Warriors faced the Bobcats for the first game on Friday, March 30, at the Heart of Florida Field located on the campus of Webber International University in Babson Park. On Saturday, March 31st, the two teams would play a double header. The Warriors improve their record to 20-17 overall and 10-7 in The Sun Conference and the Bobcats fall to 28-9 overall and 11-6 overall.
The Warriors continue their success in The Sun Conference on Friday night's. Webber improved their record 20-17 overall and 10-7 in The Sun Conference on Friday night as they took down the 12th ranked Bobcats from St. Thomas University. The Warriors continued their success with great pitching and timely hitting. On Friday night that pitching role was giving to Steven Arvanitis. Arvanitis was able to control the St. Thomas's offence by keeping their hitters off balance by changing speeds. The 12th ranked Bobcats struggled to get anything going until the 5th inning as they pushed 2 runs across but Arvanitis was able to re take control as those would be the only 2 runs St. Thomas would score on the evening. Arvanitis threw a CG, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 SO.
On the other side the Warriors offence was able to capitalize on key mistakes by the Bobcats along with timely hitting. The Warriors did not waste any time as they were able to push a run across in the 1st, 2 runs in the 3rd, 1 in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, and 1 more in the 7th. The Warriors were led offensively by Nick Pascente and Derek Self both picking up 3 hits each and both picking up 1 RBI. All seven RBI's were picked up by seven different Warriors with timely hitting to help the Webber pasted the 12th ranked Bobcats.
Game 1 of DH
In game one of the double header, the Warriors continued with their recipe of success as good pitching and timely hitting helped them take down the bobcats 9-1. The key to the Warriors success in game one was led by Jesse Wigginton. Wigginton started the day right where Arvanitis left off the night before as Wigginton was able to shut down the Bobcats, only giving up 1 unearned run. Wigginton’s completed 8 inns, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 SO. Jesse’s command was on point on Saturday as he threw 86 pitches while only throwing 15 non strikes. Brant Lickiss was able to come in and throw 1 scoreless inning in the 9th.
The Warriors were led offensively by another great performance by Nick Pascente as he picked up another 3 hits. Shane McIntyre, Josh Longrake, Hunter Ovens, Ryan Regidor, and Derek Self all picked up 2 hits each.
Game 2 of DH
In Game 2 on Saturday the Warriors were not able to repeat the winning recipe. The Warriors were unable to keep themselves in the game by struggling on the mound. The Warriors combined as a pitching staff in game 3 of the series gave up 8 base on balls as well as hitting 3 batters. 11 free passes was too much for the Warriors to overcome as they dropped the final game of the series 10-2.
The Warriors will head over to St. Petersburg, FL to take on Eckerd College on Wednesday followed by a trip to Miami, FL to take Florida Memorial in a 3 game series in a Conference Match-up. The Warriors next home game will be April 13, as they will face SCAD in a 3 game series which will be Webbers final home conference series.
