SCAD Savannah Claims Second Consecutive League Title
LAKE WORTH, Fla. – The SCAD Savannah women’s cross country team was crowned the 2014 Sun Conference Champions on Saturday. It is the second consecutive year the Bees have claimed the league title. SCAD dominated Saturday’s race with all five of the team’s scorers finishing in the top 11.
With the conference championship win, SCAD now advances to the NAIA National Championships in Lawrence, Kan. on Nov. 22.
The Bess finished first with 29 points, followed by Embry-Riddle (63), University of South Carolina Beaufort (64), Southeastern (72) and Ave Maria (167) to round out the top five team scores.
SCAD’s Lotti Zeiler won the race with a time of 18:31.61, and with her first place finish was named Sun Conference Runner of the Year. In addition to Zeiler, USCB’s Betsy Douglas (18:35.48), Joyce Miller (18:59.91), and Melissa Carder (19:00.48), SCAD’s Caroline Cook (19:07.45) and Alessa Reuffurth (18:46.89), and Embry-Riddle’s Aleyiah Ross (19:10.29) were all named to the All-Conference first team as the meet’s top seven individual finishers.
SCAD’s Chrissy Glover and Jessy Scarpone, Southeastern’s Megan Fitzgerald, Sarah Deibner, and Syndni Ogilvie, and Embry-Riddle’s Alex Orr and Martina Tafoya were all named to the All-Conference second team.
After race, Zeiler was also named Newcomer of the Year, while SCAD head coach Patrick Reagan was named Sun Conference Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year.
Additionally, Aleiyah Ross of Embry-Riddle was honored as the league’s Champion of Character award winner. Ross, a senior from Hummelstown, Pa. carries a 3.7 GPA and holds numerous leadership positions on campus. She has also started her own company,
Esperi, which provides clothing for less fortunate children.
