Eagles Win Eighth Straight Conference Crown

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men’s track & field team wrapped up their eighth straight conference title on the final day of the 2014 Sun Conference Championships on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles locked in the conference crown by finishing with 289 points, Warner finished as the runner-ups with 116 points and Northwood was third with 102 points. USCB was fourth with 71 points and Webber International rounded out the top five teams with 70 points.
 
The day began with the 3000m steeplechase, which saw ERAU’s Paul McKenna take the gold in 9:35.04. Nic O’Neill from USCB took the silver in 9:36.96 while Aesop Brown from SCAD Savannah was third in 9:46.77.
 
In the 4x100m relay, the Eagles took the gold in a “B” standard time of 41.84, Northwood took silver in 42.86 and Webber International took third in 42.68.
 
In the 1500m race ERAU went one-two with Andrew Carpenter in first with a new conference record of 3:57.92 while Alec Hernandez was second in 3:59.05. Jonathan Riley from SCAD Savannah was the bronze medalist with a time of 4:00.93.
 
In the 110m hurdles Alex Xavier from Warner was the gold medalist with a time of 15.06, Alex Dori from ERAU was the silver medalist in 15.10 and Brandon Gourdine from USCB was third in 15.28.
 
Warner swept the podium in the 400m dash with Ismael Voltaire, Jordan Clarke and Eric Mejias finishing one, two and three respectively.
 
Northwood went one-two in the 100m dash, with Tyler Hollimon taking the gold in 10.81 and Jalin Hubbard taking the silver in 10.84. Joe DiGregorio from Embry-Riddle took home the bronze in 11.01.
 
In the 800m race ERAU’s Jamin Mays won the gold in 1:54.62, Rashaad Graves from Southeastern was second in 1:55.73 and Andrew Carpenter from ERAU was third in 1:56.53.
 
In the 400m hurdles Alex Dori from ERAU won the gold in 54.96, Brandon Gourdine from USCB was second in 56.40 and Jonathan Hemingway from ERAU was third in 56.82.
 
In the pole vault competition the Eagles picked up 24 points when they swept the podium with Michael Campobasso winning the event with a mark of 4.45m while Evan Bales and A.J. Bales tied for second with a jump of 4.30m.
 
In the 200m dash Jalin Hubbard from Northwood won in 22.00, Tyler Hollimon also from Northwood was second in 22.11 and Eric Mejias from Webber International was third in 22.54.
 
ERAU swept the podium in the long jump and earned 27 total points in the process after James Bullock won in 6.94m, Richard Maku was second with a mark of 6.67m and Joe DiGregorio was third with a 6.67m mark
 
In the shot put Michael Cassidy from Warner won with a 14.15m throw, Shakil Gause from USCB was second with a 13.33m throw and Nick James from Northwood was third with a 13.09m throw.
 
In the final field event of the day, Angel Parra from ERAU took the gold in the discus with a mark of 42.31m, Michael Cassidy from Warner was second (41.58m) and Nick James from Northwood was third (41.14m).
 
In the final individual event of the meet, Emanuel Krieg from SCAD Savannah took the gold in the 5000m race finishing in 15:32.21, Paul McKenna from ERAU was second in 15:38.44 and Jacob Alplund was third in 15:51.40.
 
The final event of the day, the 4x400m relay saw Warner take home the gold in a “B” standard time of 3:16.74, ERAU with the silver in 3:17.94 and Northwood with the bronze in 3:18.77.
 
Following the meet Paul McKenna from ERAU was named The Sun Conference Track Athlete of the Year, Michael Cassidy from Warner was named The Sun Conference Field Athlete of the Year and ERAU Head Coach Mike Rosolino was named the Coach of the Year. Tyler Post from Webber International was tabbed as the leagues Champion of Character award winner.
