Jackson, Thomas Capture First Conference Titles

POOLER, Ga. – The Thomas men’s golf team made program history as Sam Jackson, Stone Cowie, James Fletcher, Alex Kitsos and Jake Schoonover combined to capture the 2014 men’s golf Sun Conference Tournament title on Tuesday in Pooler, Ga. at the Savannah Quarters Club. The title is the first for the Night Hawks since the league moved to its current format.
 
No. 24 ranked Thomas, who entered the final day of competition with a 12 stroke lead, carded a 290 holding on to win the title by 10 strokes. The Night Hawks finished with a 54-hole score of 868 (292-286-290). Sam Jackson from Thomas took home the individual title carding a five-under par 54-hole score of 211 (73-66-72). Jackson also headlined the All-Conference honorees and was named the Conference Player of the Year.
 
No. 16 Northwood improved in each round to jump to the second spot overall with an 878 total (297-293-288), while No. 9 Johnson & Wales secured third place with an 882 total (300-293-289). Southeastern finished in fourth with an 883 (299-296-288) while No. 10 Webber International rounded out the top five teams with an 885 total (300-297-288).
 
Individually, Adam Andreasson from Northwood finished strong and was the runner-up with a four-under par 212 (72-72-69). Stone Cowie from Thomas (72-72-71), Gabriel Gomez from Southeastern (74-73-68) and Carlos Andres Lara from St. Thomas (75-70-70) tied for third place overall with a 215 total.
 
With the win, Thomas has secured an automatic bid to the 63rd annual NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. on May 14-16 at LPGA International. As the host team Embry-Riddle also earns a bid to the National Championship, while the rest of The Sun Conference teams will await the announcement of at large bids by the National Office on May 9.
