SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Sun Conference handed out its women’s soccer honors for the 2015 season Thursday at the Sun Conference Tournament banquet hosted by regular-season champion SCAD Savannah.
SCAD and Keiser each placed five players on the All-Sun Conference first team along with one representative each from St. Thomas, Thomas, and Webber International.
Webber’s Cierra Abundez earned Player of the Year honors after leading the conference with 20 goals and tying for the lead with 44 points. Her 16 goals and 36 points in conference play also topped the league leaderboard. A senior forward from Naples, Fla., Abundez ranks in the top 10 nationally in shots per game (6.73), goals per game (1.33), shots on goal per game (3.53), points per game (2.93) and goals (20).
SCAD’s Rebecca Gunn was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Bees to a 12-4-2 overall record and a 9-1 mark in conference play, including a head-to-head victory over Keiser that earned SCAD the top seed in the tournament.
Keiser’s Ebba Blomqvist was selected Newcomer of the Year in addition to earning first-team All-Conference honors. Blomqvist, a freshman midfielder from Skovde, Sweden, notched three goals and seven assists this season, all of which came in conference play.
Heidi Schmidt of Johnson & Wales was selected for the Champion of Character award. A sophomore from Lenexa, Kan., Schmidt is an influential figure on campus, working with two-time men’s soccer Champion of Character award winner Pedro Codo to develop the Inter-Varsity on-campus ministry, as well as the first women’s Bible study group on campus.
The tournament semifinals are slated for Friday with No. 2 seed Keiser taking on No. 3 seed St. Thomas at 1 p.m. and top-seeded SCAD facing No. 4 seed Thomas at 3:30 p.m. The winners will square off in the championship game at 5 p.m. Saturday.
