AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The 2015 Football All-Sun Conference teams and special award honorees were announced by the Sun Conference office Monday afternoon. The All-Conference teams featured 25 first team selections and 26 second team honorees. The All-Conference teams are determined by a vote of the league’s coaches.
Point University’s Charles Fortis was named the 2015 Sun Conference Player of the Year. The senior quarterback out of Redlands, Calif., threw for 2,817 yards and amassed 36 total touchdowns (32 passing, 4 rushing). He completed 61.8 percent of his passes on the season as he led Point to the conference’s first ever appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series tournament. Fortis ranked ninth in the NAIA in both pass efficiency (153.2) and total passing (2,817 yards).
Coach Mike McCarty earned Coach of the Year honors after leading Point to a 9-2 regular season record and a perfect 5-0 mark against Sun Conference opponents. The Skyhawks, a year off of finishing 0-9 overall and 0-5 in TSC play, dominated Sun Conference opponents in 2015, winning four of their five conference games by 27 points or more. Point finished the regular season ranked 17th in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll and earned the program’s first invitation to the NAIA Football Championship Series tournament.
Ave Maria’s Sebastian Woods-Mariano was this season’s Champions of Character award recipient. The junior offensive lineman from Winter Park, Fla., has been heavily involved this season in several community outreach programs such as 1-by-1 Leadership, Habitat for Humanity, and Meals 4 Hope. He has also spent time as a volunteer assistant coach for a local high school’s varsity football team and grade school girl’s basketball team.
The league also announced the Academic All-Conference team on Monday, which included 18 football student-athletes. To be eligible for Academic All-Conference recognition, a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher with a 3.5 or better cumulative grade point average.
