MIRAMAR, Fla. – USCB concluded a dominant performance at the Sun Conference Track & Field Championships on Sunday at Ansin Sports Complex, as the Sand Sharks swept the team titles and first-year coach Bernard Gaither was named the Coach of the Year for both genders.
USCB pulled away from Keiser to win its first conference title in men's track & field. The Sand Sharks finished with 201 points, easily defeating Keiser (142) and third-place Warner (103).
The Sand Sharks won on the strength of their depth, as they had the maximum four athletes score in four events Sunday and had three score in two more events.
Freshman Malik Paul earned Outstanding Field Athlete honors after following up his win in the hammer throw (42.51m) on Saturday with a victory in the discus (39.19m) and a fourth-place finish in the shot put (12.07m).
The Sand Sharks also claimed the top four spots in the pole vault, with twins Joseph Hutchinson and Jacob Hutchinson each clearing 4.25 meters. Joseph claimed the gold by clearing the height on his first attempt, while Jacob took silver in succeeding on his third attempt.
Florida Memorial’s Shakeem Smalls was named the Outstanding Track Athlete, winning the 110-meter hurdles (14.69) and the 400-meter hurdles (54.66) and anchoring the third-place 4x400 relay team. Teammate Georges Chery (2.10m) won the high jump.
Keiser swept the relays, with the team of Avonte Boykins, Austin Rodeghier, Alexander Gorman, and Jeremy Willis winning the 4x800 (8:03.23); Corey Danvers, Thobias Nilsson Montler, Tyler Hollimon, and Yuan Pagan taking the 4x100 (42.29); and Trevor Nelson, Junior Semil, Rodeghier, and Edens Thermidor claiming the 4x400 (3:27.34). Montler also won the long jump (7.15m).
Webber International won four individual titles: Sean Trainor (4:15.05) in the 1,500, Jordan Clarke (47.87) in the 400, Dequan Harvin (13.66m) in the shot put, and Christopher Hudson (14.27m) in the triple jump.
Warner’s Tobias Durham (10.69) won the 100 and the 200 (21.61), and teammate James Pivacco (49.87m) won the javelin.
SCAD Savannah Matt Smith (34:20.95) won the 10,000 meters, and Ace Brown (9:19.99) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while Southeasetern’s Trae Miller won the 5,000 (16:06.91).
