Bees Edge Bobcats for Women’s Cross Country Title

LAKELAND, Fla.—Teammates Jessy Scarpone and Lemi Wutz set the tone for SCAD Savannah to return to the top of The Sun Conference in women’s cross country.
 
5864The tandem covered the 5,000 meter course at Holloway Park side-by-side, crossing the finish line hand-in-hand to lead the Bees to their fifth Sun Conference title in the last six years.
 
Sarah Foreman was ninth with Hannah Sharp 11th and Tess St. John rounding out the scoring in 20th.
 
St. Thomas was just four points behind SCAD, finishing second. The Bobcats were paced by Sarah Bomkamp in fifth in 18:57 and Susana Gutierrez six seconds behind Bomkamp in sixth.
 
Defending champion Southeastern finished third, led by Freshman of the Year Julia Rohm who was third in 18:38.
 
Freshman Mary Goetz led Ave Maria to a fourth-place finish, placing fourth herself in 18:54.
 
Rohm, Goetz, Bomkamp, and Gutierrez all earned individual bids to the NAIA National Championship, as did SCAD Savannah as a team.
 
For his efforts in guiding SCAD to the title, coach Patrick Reagan was named Coach of the Year by his peers.
 
The top seven runners earned First Team All-Sun Conference recognition, with the next seven named to the second team.
