The Sun Conference Players of the Week 4/8/19
The Sun Conference recognized the following student-athletes as Players of the Week in their respective sports for competitions ending by April 8, 2019.
BASEBALL
Pitcher: Orlando Rodriguez, St. Thomas
NAIA All-American, Orlando Rodriguez, was victorious in a Sun Conference pitchers’ duel on Friday night, leading No. 10 St. Thomas to a 2-1 victory over No. 25 Webber International. Rodriguez struck out 10 Warriors in eight innings of work, only allowing one earned run to earn his fifth win of the season. Orlando’s ERA is now down to 1.18 on the season.
Player: Manuel Mesa, Southeastern
Mesa hit an electric .588 (10-17) at the plate this past week with six extra-base hits and a .632 on-base percentage. Versus Florida Memorial on Friday night, Mesa became the first SEU player since 2/21/2009 to hit for the cycle, accomplishing the feat in just four at-bats. Mesa was also a perfect 4-4 on stolen bases.
GOLF
Men: Alberto Uriach, Webber International
Alberto Uriach shot a two-under par during round two on the par-73 Gold Course, and his three-round score of 219 was good for the Warriors’ lowest combined score during any three-round tournament all season long so far.
Women: Paula Sofia Suarez, SCAD
The sophomore led her team to a winning finish with her individual title. the Bees were the only NAIA team at the competition, defeating 11 NCAA DII institutions.
SOFTBALL
Pitcher: Maria Molloseau, USCB
Molloseau pitched a perfect game for the Sand Sharks in their game verses Trinity Baptist. In the contest, she struck out 7 of the 15 batters faced. Molloseau returned to the circle in the Sand Shark's second game against conference opponent Ave Maria where she was able to shut down the Gyrenes offense, giving up just one hit and striking out 1.
Player: Holly Campbell, Thomas
Campbell posted multiple hits in three of four games this week leading the Night Hawks to a perfect 4-0 week. She is currently hitting .379 and leads the team in runs scored.
TENNIS
Men: Arthur Bonnaud, Keiser
Bonnaud won both his singles and doubles matches against Flagler in their lone match of the week against Flagler in a 5-2 win.
Women: Sharienne Ricardo, Southeastern
Sharienne Ricardo and her doubles partner earned a victory for the Fire, winning against Webber's 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. In singles competition, Ricardo only dropped one game to Webber's best. In the first set, Ricardo beat WIU rival 6-1, and then swept her opponent in the second set 6-0. The Fire have won nine games in a row and clinched the No. 3 seed in The Sun Conference Tournament with the win against RV Webber.
TRACK & FIELD
Men's Field: Elijah Merida, USCB
Merida placed 2nd in the Decathlon at the Susan Rouse Invitational. This finish gives him 1st place in the Sun Conference and 15th in the Nation. 100m - 11.46 Long Jump - 6.10m Shot Put - 8.75m High Jump - 1.67m 400m - 51.71 110m Hurdles - 21.30 Discus - 20.07 Pole Vault - 2.40m Javelin - 40.74m 1500m - 4:59.17
Men's Track: Demetrius Davis, USCB
Davis won the 110 Hurdles at the Susan Rouse Invitational in a time of 15.54.
Women's Field: Wesley Martin, USCB
Martin was the winner in the pole vault with a mark of 2.18 at the Georgia Southern Spring Classic.
Women's Track: Jaslyn Joseph, USCB
Joseph won the Women's Heptathlon at the Susan Rouse Invitational, giving her first place in the Sun Conference and 11th in the Nation. Joseph took first in 3 of the 7 events. 100m Hurdles - 15.41 High Jump - 1.51m Shot Put - 8.65m 200m - 27.51 Long Jump - 4.79m Javelin - 21.64 800m - 2:54.36
