MIAMI, Fla. (February 24, 2022) – The Sun Conference announced on Thursday its award winners for the 2021-22 women’s basketball season.
Southeastern’s
Angela Perry was named the Sun Conference Player of the Year. In her first year with the Fire, Perry has averaged 18.7 points per game (No. 1 in the conference), shooting 57.2 percent from the floor (No. 2 in the conference). She scored in double-figures 25 times, including an SEU-career-high 34 versus Loyola (12/10). A four-time Sun Conference Player of the Week this year, Perry was eight in the league in rebounding, averaging 6.5 boards per game.
Warner’s
Chanelle McDonald was named the Sun Conference Freshman of the Year. The first-year Royal led all conference freshmen in points per game (13.0), shooting 61.5 percent from the field. Ranking sixth in the conference in points per game, Barnett scored in double-figures 13 times, including a career-high 22 points versus Webber International (11/13). She led WU is blocked shots (20), averaging 0.8 per game (No. 6 in the conference).
Ave Maria’s
Alex Moorehead was named the Sun Conference Coach of the Year. In his first season at the helm, Moorehead guided the Gyrenes to No. 5 seed with an 8-8 conference record and an overall mark of 16-11. AMU picked up the program’s first conference tournament victory since 2015 with a 48-44 win over Keiser in the SUN Quarterfinals (2/22). Under Moorehead the Gyrenes had an eight-game swing in the win column improving from an 8-19 record in 2020-21.
Coastal Georgia’s
Sonia Forney was named the Sun Conference Champion of Character. Forney is always willing to go above and beyond not only on the court but off of the court. She serves as the campus tour host for incoming and transferring students and athletes at CCGA. She also volunteers with various activities and clubs on campus and always has a smile and pleasant demeanor.
