TAMPA, Fla. – The Sun Conference is pleased to announce
James Tuffy of St. Thomas University as the recipient of the 2023-24 Athletic Trainer (AT) of the Year award, as voted by his colleagues within the league.
"Jim is an integral part of the growth and success that we have achieved at St. Thomas," St. Thomas Vice President of Athletics Bill Rychel said. "His work ethic and organization have been an asset to our teams and student athletes. It is great to see him recognized by the Conference for the extraordinary work in sports medicine that we appreciate daily."
Tuffy is the primary trainer for St. Thomas University Athletics, overseeing all the Sports Medicine staff and athletes for the Bobcats that includes 29 varsity sports and 1,000 student-athletes, while also serving as a member of the STU athletic leadership team.
"I am deeply honored to receive the Athletic Trainer of the Year award from my esteemed colleagues across the conference," Tuffy stated. "This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire Athletic Training team at St. Thomas University. Our shared commitment to the health and well-being of our student-athletes is what drives us every day. I am grateful for Associate VP of Athletics, Bill Rychel for nominating me, President David A. Armstrong, J.D. for the support of the university, the collaboration with my fellow athletic trainers, and the trust of our athletes. Thank you for this incredible honor."
Tuffy obtained his master's degree from Wilkes University and his undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh. Tuffy has played an instrumental role in innovation at St. Thomas University Sports Medicine, aiming to create the best experience for all student-athletes for years to come.
As this year’s SUN AT of the Year, Tuffy will now be nominated for consideration for the national NAIA AT of the Year award which will be announced September 15th.
