Coastal Georgia Men Travel to Warner and Mariners' Women Host Webber International in Basketball "Games of the Week"

Men's featured game slated for Thursday night in Lake Wales; Women's matchup set for Saturday afternoon in Brunswick

TAMPA, Fla. – Teams fighting for coveted spots among the league’s top six for berths in the upcoming Sun Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships tournaments will face off this week in The Sun Conference "Games of the Week."

The featured games tip off with the men on Thursday when Coastal Georgia visits Warner. The women’s Game of the Week will be played on Saturday when Webber International travels to Brunswick, Ga., for a matchup with Coastal Georgia.

The Coastal Georgia men (10-8, 3-4) and Warner (14-5, 3-4) enter Thursday night’s meeting with identical 3-4 marks in Sun play and in a tie for fifth place in the league standings as the conference season approaches the midway point this weekend. The Mariners have won three of their last four Sun outings after losing their first three conference games of the season. Warner, the defending Sun regular-season champion and the preseason pick of the league’s coaches to win the 2019-20 title, snapped a two-game Sun losing streak with a 79-76 home victory over neighboring rival Webber International last Saturday.

A similar circumstance occurs on the women’s side this week as teams fight for the top six slots in the league standings and a potential berth in the season-ending conference tournament. While NAIA No. 1-ranked Southeastern comfortably leads the pack with a perfect 8-0 mark, much of the rest of the 10-team conference is battling to make the conference tourney field and fight for one of the two Sun automatic berths into the NAIA national tournament.

Webber International (9-8, 3-4) has won its last two conference games to move into sixth place. The first of those two Warrior wins was a 74-56 victory at Johnson & Wales on Jan 4 and gave the Wildcats their first Sun Conference loss of the 2019-20 season. The Warriors then went on to defeat rival Warner last Saturday (70-53). Coastal Georgia (10-5, 5-2) has won its last three conference games to push its mark to 5-2. The Mariners’ two league losses have been at home to No. 1 Southeastern and on the road vs. Johnson & Wales.
